Body jewelries "The antipatharian corals have an interesting history, and I am sending you herewith a brief summary that I prepared in response to an earlier inquiry about them. I am also sending a copy of my paper on work in the Palaus in which the large, fan-shaped antipatharian is illustrated (pl. 18, fig. 2), and reprints of two papers on Philippines gorgonians, which you might pass along to Harold Hall. Most of the species known at the present time from the Philippines Islands derive from deep-water dredging. The gorgonians and antipatharians of shallower depths are scientifically unknown because they have never been collected. People working with aqualungs as the Halls are doing, are in a good position to contribute something very worthwhile to the knowledge of the Philippines fauna by collecting these animals, and I shall be happy to correspond with Mr. Hall or anyone else who cares to try collecting them seriously. I might add that, in addition to the parasitic snail you mentioned in your account. (which was new to me, because all the ovulids I know of are associates of gorgonian and alcyonacean corals), there are others that encyst within the skeletal part of the black corals where they form conspicous galls. Rhizochilus antipathicus, which belongs in the Magilidae right next door to Coralliophila and Quoyula, has already been found on antipatharians in Philippines and I imagine you know about it. Because of its peculiar habits it seems to be quite scarce in collections but is probably not rare in the right places. Body jewelries
Body jewelries During a recent conversation with Bert, I obtained a clue which may explain the reason why Philippine collectors have not been able to zero-in on this species. Bert had been swimming at a depth of 40 feet, turning over small brick-sized chunks of dead coral that were scattered over the flat, hard ocean floor. Here and there appeared patches of coarse sand. He had pocketed a number of Cypraea helvola found underneath these coral chunks and was in the process of returning one such chunk to its original position, when out rolled the little labrolineata. But it did NOT roll out from the bottom of the chunk. Instead, it fell out of algae growing on top of the coral. What collector searches the algae ON TOP of dead coral? None, as far as I know.
