Fashion gifts "Rumphius, the remarkable 17th century naturalist who worked in the East Indies, mentions that the – earlier authors Salmasius and Solinus state that Antipathes was a protection against sorcery, as Pliny had earlier. Dioscorides, the ancient Greek botanist, attributed medical properties to Antipathes, and it was used as an antidote against scorpion stings as well as for magical purposes. Bracelets and other articles made of black coral are still worn in the Far East and in the East Indies as a cure for rheumatism and as a charm to prevent drowning, in accordance with beliefs having a long traditional background. According to Rumphius, the Malay natives shaped Antipathes into bracelets by soaking it in coconut oil and bending it into the desired form over a low fire while rubbing it with oil, after which it was polished with leaves and sometimes inlaid with precious metals. Chiefs used scepters made of Antipathes as a symbol of authority. Black coral was also esteemed as a medicine by the Malays, and also as a sort of tonic to promote the healthy growth of children.
