Fashion tiles shellFashion tiles shell "Just before leaving Kudat, I got a very large piece of Gorgonia, the flat sea fan, and among the mollusca collected from it, which I have just had time to examine, is one which I am pretty sure is the Volva brevirostris illustrated in your January issue and mentioned as being the shell found on the black coral tree. My specimen is just under an inch long, and of a uniform brownish-rose or carnelian color. It appears identical with the illustration of brevirostris in Hirase's book, and very like Kira's plate 18, No. 10, although the point of mine is not so long. The interesting point is that it was found on the Gorgonia and not on the black coral. I have sent a message to the chief on the island from which it came, to look for more and if he finds any to send it to me with a piece of the 'sea tree' on which it was found.
