Fashion wood Recently we reported the find by Tom Richert of some unusual bivalves. They were dredged from over 1,000 feet off Keehi. The shells have still not been identified. See illustration below [omitted]. Fashion wood
Fashion wood The picture above [right] shows an unusually colorful specimen of S. goliath. This shell still has its attractive periostractum which is a tan-brown hue. The inside of the aperture is vividly colored with a pinkish-orange blending to white at the outside extremities. There is dark brown coloration on the inside of the main body whorl. Philippine Shell member Dr. Harry Lee of San Francisco collected S. goliath during a scuba dive off Salvador, Brazil, during a recent visit to South America. While Strombus goliath is considered a rare shell in most areas, Dr. Lee reports that a number of specimens were available for sale at very reasonable prices in Brazil. Fashion wood
