Handmade retail manufacturer of philippine handicrafts This is a surprise sequel to my recent report on two dead Cypraea marginalis Dillwyn found at Diani Beach, East Africa. To my great thrill and excitement I discovered that I have actually collected three more, live, C. marginalis during my repeat trip to the same area in February of this year. The shells were collected on 6th February 1969 during an extreme low tide (four days after full moon) from the undersides of large coral boulders lying half submerged in the lagoon at just around low tide level. They are three little beauties of 24.5, 23, and 18.5mm [in length], respectively, with dark olive brown dorsum spotted profusely with white dots, some of which are ringed with dark brown. The base is a shiny, deep mauve with some dots and, on the outer lip, streaks of darker purple. (See photo [right].) Handmade retail manufacturer of philippine handicrafts

October to January specimens are to be found on eggs. These are usually laid in a half valve of E. bifrons – color, golden-yellow; massed together by a gelatinous substance and numbering 150 to 200 eggs. The smallest living shell found was 17 x 10 x 8 mm., found in February. This was golden-yellow, paper thin and without trace of banding. During August and September many bulla Philippines shells may be found, with a saffron-yellow animal, contrasting with the black of the adult. By the beginning of October, the only trace of juvenile Philippines shells are those with a slightly protruding spire. Some of these have been found on eggs, so it would seem that from this and the clean undamaged appearance of other Philippines shells found on eggs, the full cycle from egg to laying adult is approximately twelve months. C. thersites seems to reach full maturity in that time. The old adult Philippines shells can easily be identified by the prominent growth scars, the diseased blotches, the pimples that develop on the dorsum, the thickening of the shell, and by the marks left from the terrific buffetting they receive in the rough seas and strong tides.
