The tide was on the ebb and we eventually chose a reasonably promising looking spit of exposed boulders and coral that formed part of a small uninhabited island. Initially I was discouraged by the cloudy waters that lapped in small wavelets against half-exposed slabs of dead coral and rocks. I need not have been. After only twenty minutes of turning over pieces of coral in ankle-deep water I was rewarded by a flash of vivid orange the mantle of a Cypraea saulae siasiensis. I continued to look for a possible mate, but my day was already complete and I couldn't expect my luck to go too far. Besides, the sun was setting and the typical swift dusk of the tropics would soon be upon us. After finding a pair of handsome and very dark Cypraea lamarcki redimita under a nearby rock, I decided to call it a day. Jewelry bamboo furnituresJewelry bamboo furnitures BREEDING After five years collecting and studying thersites we find that the breeding habits seem to follow a fairly consistant pattern, give or take a few weeks here or there. October to January specimens are to be found on eggs. These are usually laid in a half valve of E. bifrons – color, golden-yellow; massed together by a gelatinous substance and numbering 150 to 200 eggs. The smallest living shell found was 17 x 10 x 8 mm., found in February. This was golden-yellow, paper thin and without trace of banding. During August and September many bulla shells may be found, with a saffron-yellow animal, contrasting with the black of the adult. By the beginning of October, the only trace of juvenile shells are those with a slightly protruding spire. Some of these have been found on eggs, so it would seem that from this and the clean undamaged appearance of other shells found on eggs, the full cycle from egg to laying adult is approximately twelve months. C. thersites seems to reach full maturity in that time. The old adult shells can easily be identified by the prominent growth scars, the diseased blotches, the pimples that develop on the dorsum, the thickening of the shell, and by the marks left from the terrific buffetting they receive in the rough seas and strong tides.
