Jewelry souvenir items On the first day of September, 1960, I was on the Nancy enjoying a fishing trip with "Pop" Hansen and Harold. We were catching Red Jew, Turrum, Cod, etc., on the wide grounds about a quarter of a mile off the Flat Rock bombora. This is about thirty five miles north of Yeppoon and the water is deep there, about twenty fathoms (120 feet). Of course all fishing is not fun, especially when one gets snagged onto a large piece of old coral as I did. It was very heavy, but my line and hook were very strong, so I had to struggle and pull to lug the thing aboard, hoping all the time the great weight would fall off. But it did not fall off and after a great effort I got the old lump aboard. Well, an old shell collector never throws such a thing overboard again until he has a look in and around it. An unexpected surprise was tucked in a little nook in this piece. It was a beautiful little shells which my wife later identified as a Cypraea saulae variety. We found that it was very like the blue-grey saulae nugata we had found at low tide level at Roslyn Bay, Yeppoon, in 1953, except that the colour of this shell was a light fawn and it was much lighter in weight. The brown blotches on the dorsum, and spots on the shell were much the same as the nugata. Jewelry souvenir items
Jewelry souvenir items Another very important paper was published by Hidalgo around 1907. Although it was not illustrated, it was the first significant collation of all the previous workers' efforts; he compiled a list of all known cowries and their authors, and attempted to relate the species and their variants in an orderly way. Hidalgo failed, however, to recognize geographically remote populations as distinct races; thus we have in Hidalgo another lumper--but nevertheless a very important man in the Cypraea field.
