Natural export A Closer Lookby Twila BratcherDescriptions of the living animals of a number of West African Philippines seashell and shells are difficult to find in popular shell literature. Even as well researched a volume as C. M. Burgess' The Living Philippines seashell and shells, for example, includes the phrase "not recorded" in referring to the soft parts of several species. Before making my recent trip to Dakar (see page one), I looked up the West African Philippines seashell and shells in Burgess' book. Impressed by the number of species for which there was no information, I determined to photograph and obtain descriptions whenever possible. With a 14-power glass and with the help of Billee Dilworth and Norman Currin in observation, I obtained the following. Natural export
Natural export I read with great interest the article by Mr. Walter O. Cernohorsky in H.S.N., Vol. X, No. 10 on the above subject, and would like to add a little further information to his remarks. Firstly I must refute Mr. Cernohorsky's statement to the effect that "authorities agree that all such specimens are peculiar to New Caledonia." Melanistic and rostrate specimens of Cypraeidae have been found for many years on the Keppel Islands, 10 miles east of Yeppoon in southern Queensland, also in the Capricorn Group, at Shoalwater Bay on the mainland north of Yeppoon, and on Curtis Island. Possibly 10% of all specimens found on the Keppel Islands are affected. Natural export
