Natural handmade glass
Natural handmade glass It did not take us long to seek out some shell "contacts." Firstly, there was Mr. Mahomed Mussa Virjee, the local shell wholesaler. His office is situated in the centre of a maze of little winding streets which only pedestrians and an occasional bicycle can penetrate. He reigns supreme over his establishment. He has several brothers and other assistants, all of them possessed of an old-world courtesy, but only Mr. Virjee reaches the decisions whether it be to offer you a cup of sticky black coffee hailed from a passing Arab vendor, or to let you peep at his treasure store! Natural handmade glass Although mollusk shells have been collected and their intricate designs admired for centuries, they remain an enigma to most of us. The adaptive significance of elaborate shell ornamentation baffles us, especially in mollusks covered with dense periostraca so that the pattern is obscured. There is undoubtedly no single solution to this puzzle, as could be expected of a complex biological system. That is, some shell patterns may have obvious adaptive significance, for example the cryptic (or camouflage) coloration of many limpets and land snails which are subject to intensive visual predation by birds. Other species may have shells which have no manifest correlation with environmental factors, even though the ornamentation may be very intricate. Natural handmade glass
