Natural public LIGHT, THE ENEMYOne of the most "dangerous" enemies of a shell collection, apart from the dust which is in any case necessarily and easily removed, is light, especially direct sunlight. The fading of the colours caused by light is much more intense and rapid than can be imagined; thus an arrangement which protects the specimens from both dust and light - natural and artificial - is ideal. Very useful for this purpose are various types of chests of drawers, in which is it also easy to organize a division which gives an initial order to the collection. Absolutely to be avoided are showcases and, even worse, shelves, unless one intends to "sacrifice" some specimens for the "enjoyment" of exhibiting them as ornamental objects. Among the weakest pigments under the influence of light are the carotenoids, which endow certain specimens with their lovely orange and red colour; thus it is natural that among the species which are most sensitive to light figure Lyncina aurantium, Conus bullatus, and Conus pertusus, to name just a few simple examples. One last recommendation concerns humidity: not excessive, but not too little, either. A value of approximately 60% is estimated as ideal; too much dryness tends to deteriorate the shell's organic matrix, but too much humidity, especially if associated with cold, my cause the dangerous bacterial infection known as "Byne's disease", which results in the inevitable loss of the specimen; it also seems to spread with a certain ease from one shell to another. Natural public The subject of shells came up and Alex showed me the Strombus he had discovered in the wreckage of an ancient wooden hull in 1956. Rough seas had just wrested the old ship from a sandy tomb when Alex happened on her. While not a conchologist, he nevertheless recognized the alien shell amid a heap of ballast stones, jugs and an ancient anchor. It was the only souvenir he collected from his first wreck.
