Natural wood brooch "Before answering the questions in your letter, I must first point out that the term 'black coral' applies to the skeleton of several species belonging to three main types of anthozoan coelenterates, not to any one particular species. The name is used for the black, horny aids of several kinds of gorgonians, of the colonial zoanthid sea-anemone called Gerardia, and of the antipatharian corals in general. From very early times this black substance was thought to have mystical properties, especially as a protection against illness, and all black coral was collectively called 'antipathes' from Greek anti – against + pathein from pascho – to feel or suffer, hence 'against suffering' (especially from disease). This name has been retained in modern zoological nomenclature as Antipatharia, an order of tree-like horny corals of which one genus is Antipathes. The Antipatharia are now the only corals properly called black corals by present-day zoologists. Natural wood brooch
