Philippines mother of pearl shell nuggets
Philippines mother of pearl shell nuggets An interesting shell I saw recently was what seems to be a cross between M. hirase and M. cailleti. The body measures two inches and the canal is another two inches. We have both M. hirasei and M. cailleti, but they are much smaller than the apparent "cross." Philippines mother of pearl shell nuggets The distribution range of Philippine Philippines Jewelry labiosus was previously listed as East Africa to the Rykyus and the East Indies. The shell is never collected in shallow water and known specimens have been obtained from deep water dredgings only. The species must be rather uncommon as no soft parts were ever available for anatomical studies. On the 2nd of September, 1962, accompanied by a fellow collector, I went dredging about 5 miles off the mainland at Momi (W-coast of Viti Levu). Our first dredging run disclosed that the bottom was muddy sand and before we decided to change locality we dropped the dredge for another try. After hauling the dredge up and having sorted the Philippines shells, we found two S. labiosus amongst an otherwise unproducitve lot of rubble. Both these specimens were just recently dead and in a good state of preservation. In subsequent hauls we dredged two more specimens, one of which was alive and perfect.
