Dead C. childreni characteristically turn up on porous reef or in coral rubble in moderately calm water. These conditions occur best on the lagoon coral heads and on the leeward oceanside dropoff and surge channels a honeycomb of caves and small holes to a depth of forty feet below the reef top. Many of the surge channels (fifty to sixty feet deep) have coral piles at the base of the reef, through which molluscs can travel without coming into the open.
