Philippines shells gift basket My collecting of late has been while skin diving along the shallow water of Waikiki Beach. My swimming is mainly for exercise but I also collect whatever I see. Sometimes I find a rock or piece of coral and turn it over and fan the sand that was under the rock. My finds are seldom shells but they are always interesting. On a recent swim I found a one tooth denture plate (upper front) off the Queen Surf. I also found a 14 Karat, white gold wedding ring. Both were "collected" in 4 to 6 feet under sand. The ring may be claimed by identifying the initials in the band. Write me c/o Sean Raynon Sabado or call 734-2717. Philippines shells gift basket
Philippines shells gift basket A totally particular development of the varices is found in the Muricidae, the Ranellidae (formerly Cymatiidae), and the Bursidae, for example, while in the Epitoniidae they maintain a characteristic lamellar structure and are present in relatively high numbers. Especially in certain genera of Muricidae, i.e. Murex, Siratus, Pterynotus and Ceratostoma, the conformation of the last varix contributes to protecting the mollusc from attacks from predators, since it is shielded by a true barrier of spines, as in the Murex, or by a uniform septum, thin but relatively solid. Also as far as the sculpturing is concerned, it is necessary to remember the developed or radial carinae of many Xenophores, carinae which permit the mollusc to frequent muddy bottoms without the shell’s tending to sink into the substrate; a substitutive element for the carina, when absent, in the Xenophores is the attachment of foreign matter, other empty shells, sponges or small stones, all around the shell, in place of the carina; the material thus arranged and cemented into place performs well the function of a structure which, in itself, is missing. Also on the subject of varices, we must not leave out the balancing function which the labial varix of the Lambis, typically shaped into finger-like processes, carries out in the mollusc’s deambulation; the weight and the extension of the varix, in fact, shifts the shell’s barycentre considerably, so that the mollusc is able to keep it decidedly slanted without the risk of toppling over, even though it proceeds with the typical "jerky" gait found in the Strombidae, to which the Lambis belongs. And precisely in the Strombidae - and probably not by chance - almost all of the larger and more massive species, such as those of the subgenus Tricornis, have an aperture which is extremely developed and falring, forming a sort of large "wing", as can be seen in Strombus gigas, goliath and latissimus.
