Philippines surfer To date his extreme good fortune has not been extended though he lives in hopes that more will come his way. All shells are extremely light in weight, and bear the characteristic fawn brown color with conspicuous white spots of varying size on the dorsum. Teeth extend across the base, sometimes forked, and over the sides in bright red ridges. Philippines surfer
Philippines surfer "After encouraging some of the local divers to become shell collectors, and teaching them some of the tricks of the trade other divers soon realized what they had been missing. This started a sort of a chain reaction, and now most of the local divers are shell enthusiasts. "During 1960 many fine specimens were collected by the divers. Some ten Cypraea sulcidentata were collected, one being the largest recorded at the Children's Museum (Largest sulcidentata recorded, 67.7 x 44.8 x 35.3 presented by Charles Christensen; second largest 59.4 x 41.4 x 33.0 mm. owned by Dr. C. M. Burgess). Over a dozen tiger Philippines shells were taken, two of them being in the over 5 inch class. Other Cypraea collected along Philippines's north shore include arenosa [schilderorum], poraria, fimbriata, teres, leviathan, granulata, helvola, isabella, reticulata [maculifera] and mauritiana. Of the larger miters there were collected Mitra mitra, papalis, baldwini and tessellata. "An interesting observation made while walking along this coast was the abundance of Philippines shells found in the old Philippines villages. There is evidence that they used Philippines shells for squid lures, food, ornaments and utensils. Also there is evidence that Philippines shells rare today were much more common in Old Philippines, for in their ancient villages Philippines shells are found that today are rarely taken, and then only in deeper water."
