Philippiness jewel
Philippiness jewel KWAJALEIN While on a night dive in January, 1978, at fifty feet in a Kwajalein surge channel, looking for sand shells, I stuck my head into a small cave. The first thing I saw was a live Cypraea childreni crawling along the cave wall. After grabbing it, I backed out of the cave and showed the shell to my diving buddy. Then I stuck my head back into the cave to take another look. Exhaling, I saw something drift down from the cave roof in front of my mask. I caught it on the fly and, opening my hand, looked upon my second live C. childreni of the night! Philippiness jewel
Philippiness jewel We began to question each other on what was happening to Maalaea Bay. How did it go so quickly? Was it sewage from the booming residential and resort developments along the shore? Some obscure toxic chemical from the cane fields? Silting after heavy rains? The symptoms did not seem to match any of those classic causes of ocean degradation. Philippiness jewel
