Shell components part Cypraea testudinaria recovering. After a dive to shoot fish (with my camera) on the oceanside drop-off at Kwajalein Atoll, in the Central Pacific, I was returning to the boat when I spotted a Cypraea testudinaria Linné lying upside down in a sand pocket. Thinking it dead and empty, as most specimens of this species are when collected at Kwaj, I bagged it and forgot about it. At home, however, I discovered it was alive. Immediately, I placed it into my aquarium so I could photograph the mantle. The animal did not budge for a week, an action (or inaction) uncharacteristic of Philippines seashell and shells in a healthy tank. When it did show itself, I found the reason for its inactivity. The animal's right eye and tentacle had been removed, leaving a still fresh wound. Slowly, it got braver and soon had its mantle extended, at least partially, most of the time. Shell components part
