Shell fancy philippines jewelry Editor Ellis Cross made a collecting trip to the favorite corner of his underwater supermarket off the Ewa Beach area and came up with some real finds. Two Conus spiceri, one about 5" the other slightly over 4"; a Cypraea rashleighana nearly an inch long. These from about 45 feet on a hard coral plateau. Also collected, from 30 feet from under a small piece of coral, Umbraculum sinicum In this same general area three nice Cypraea sulcidentata (most of these in shallow water were "dinged" and not suitable for keeping); a Casmaria erinaceus; a huge Conus quercinus; two Cypraea tigris, one in 120 feet of water measured 5-1/2" long, the other from a shallow 80 feet, measured only 5" plus; from under a piece of coral in about 30 feet a 4" Murex elongatus (dead and crabbed but in fair condition); plus several species of Mitra and most of the Philippine Bursa species. He also reported seeing many Cassis cornuta in the Pinna beds (estimates put the number at about 100 or so). Most of these appeared to be chipped or stained so badly they could not have been properly cleaned for a collection. Of ten shells brought to the surface, six had a strange appearance and will be reported on at a later time. Shell fancy philippines jewelry
Shell fancy philippines jewelry Perhaps of more interest to those with a scientific bent, and this possibly could be another subject, is that most Apra Harbor C. mappa appear to exhibit some consistent characteristics which tend to distinguish them from typical C. mappa. These are: 1. A more noticeable though sometimes faint basal columellar blotch reminiscent of C. maculifera, plate A 2. A stronger tendency to demonstrate anterior bimaculate terminal spots, plate C. 3. A more pronounced basal columellar spotting covering about one-half the lateral margin and labial spotting covering about one-third to one-half the distance to the aperture, plate B. 4. Lastly, and though I do not have enough study material to make a comparison of the mean size for a large number of foreign C. mappa, I would guess that these from Apra Harbor average out quite a bit smaller than others of this species and more notably with a far greater proportion of the very small ones represented in a given number of specimens. The very small ones are considered to be those less than two inches in length. Shells No. 10, 11, 12 are all under the two inch mark. After having examined a few other collections and having subsequently collected a few more shells myself since the original twelve, I would estimate that the small ones occur in a proportion of about one in five.
