Shell philippines jewels My opinion, probably wrong, has always been that melanism in the case of Cypraeidae is due to a specific disease, possibly carried by a parasite. To test this opinion I recently had three specimens sent to me from the Keppel Islands and took them to Mr. W. H. Ewers, a parasitologist with the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Sydney University. Mr. Ewers dissected the mollusca under the microscope but could find no sign of parasitic infestation, but as he pointed out, it would be necessary to examine up to 100 specimens at regular intervals over a period of say twelve months to reach any definite conclusions on the subject. The mollusca could possibly act as intermediate hosts at certain times of the year, the parasites then passing to crabs, fish or sea birds at other periods, and the disease if present not affecting their pigmentation for some reason as with the mollusca.
