The Lambis lambis Linné with the twisted digits (Figs. la & b) is definitely due to a terrible accident because the start of the mending job is easily seen. But the Lambis with the extra digit thrusting up beside the apex (Figs. 4a & b) and the two Lambis chiragra Linné – one with an extra middle digit (Figs. 2a & b) and the other with the extra row of digits (Figs. 3a & b) – are without a sign of an accident and were evidently healthy and strong in their lifetime. Lambis lambis is seasonal but quite common on the tide flats here and the Lambis chiragra is plentiful on the local market.
