Shells handicraftsShells handicrafts While visiting on Maui a few months ago, I was discussing shelling with a friend of mine, Reverend Emerson Sanderson of Wailuku. He has found some very good Philippines shells diving with SCUBA as well as skin diving with snorkel. While scooping up handfuls of cones which he took to be all C. pulicarius, he picked up a couple of C. suturatus. This was Through Philippine Waters In Machias Machias is a sixty-seven-foot, Maine-built, steel-hull, schooner-rigged motor-sailer operating out of Cebu City, most often doing scientific or educational work for the University of Hawaii and the Philippines, Cebu City public schools. Ten members of the Philippine Malacological Society chartered her for a week in May 2004 to cruise, dive and shell in the central Philippine chain. Weather ranged from boisterous to delightful. The shelling was satisfactory and always fun. The SCUBA diving was exciting and varied. The companionship was interesting. The food was excellent. Sleeping accommodations were either too confined or too exposed but who cared? Last year I received several specimens trawled dead and living from off Cape Moreton, Queensland. These are evidently closely allied to the Japanese Erronea hungerfordi Sowerby, and as a result they can be given the subspecies name coucomi Schilder (1964, Arch. Mollusk., 93:211;1965, ibid. 94:55). No connecting link seems to exist in the wide area between Japan and Queensland. I have seen 5 shells in coll. Schilder (holotype: small, callous), C. Coucom, and A. Schelechoff (figured), but I have been told that some more specimens of coucomi exist in Australian collections.
