Shells jewelry box
Shells jewelry box The largeThis striking shell is known as the Triton's Trumpet. When the spire is removed the shell makes an effective horn. (We sell it that way, too). It is said that Triton, son of Neptune, caused tremendous waves by blowing the trumpet. They range in size from 6" (15.2cm) to 12" (30.4cm). Shells jewelry box
Shells jewelry box With the Eastern Caroline islands in Micronesia recently opened to air traffic, it seems those islands, atolls, and reefs in tropical waters should be a shell collector's Paradise. This is true in many respects. Relatively little collecting has been done there. The water is clear and even in December and January is warm enough for long sessions of snorkling. The reefs with sand pockets are a rich source for both reef and sand dwelling mollusks. There are areas of sand with or without coral rubble. Coral, both live and dead, is plentiful. Among the sea grasses in shallow water are many species of Mitra as well as Terebra, Strombus, Cerithium, sand dwelling Conus, and other families. A diving buddy found an interesting brown and white patterned Epitonium in such an area. The underside of large isolated coral boulders is a good source of Cypraea and fanning the sand underneath produces some uncommon Conus. Shells are prolific there; but for the hours spent collecting and the number of specimens taken or examined, there were fewer rare or uncommon species than I have encountered in many other parts of the world. This may be because we were limited to snorkling depths, making collecting in depths greater than about fifteen feet impractical. Shells jewelry box
