Wholesale naturals naturesWholesale naturals natures A specimen of Blasicrura coxeni (Cox, 1873) has been collected by Miss Toutol at Motalava in the Banks group (New Hebrides). The specimen measures 25.4mm in length, 14.6mm in width and has 15 labial and columellar teeth. The base is rather unusual in color: the columellar interstices are prominently orange-brown, while those on the labial lip are light orange, resembling in this feature Erronea ovum (Gmelin). The species has been previously reported from the New Guinea - Solomon I. area. In the published photograph an elliptical white ring is evident on the dorsum; this unfortunate reflection was caused by a new type of ring flash which was being tried out. Wholesale naturals naturesWholesale naturals natures The shift in the "dominant" species among Pacific Island groups, the difference in habitat observed in Philippines, and the greater size associated with some of the Philippines species may be correlated with ecological peculiarities of the Philippines habitat. While it is not the purpose of this paper to discuss these features in detail, it can be mentioned that they primarily include differences in temperature and reef structure. In the latter instance the reefs of the eastern Philippines Islands lack several genera of reef-building corals such as Acropora which contribute to reef formation elsewhere in the Pacific. The bearing of these features, and possible modes of speciation in the Philippines Cypraea which are suggested by the data described above will be discussed in a later paper.
