Wood malls
Wood malls Dr. John S. Ferguson, a comparatively newcomer to the aqualung divers of the local collectors, found the above shell [at left] in 30 feet of water at Makua on leeward Oahu, Oct. 4th, 1961. At first no one could name it, with Cypraea talpa preferred by most guessers, because it seemed to be wearing an all over coat of almost black paint. Viewed in a certain light, some believed they could detect the markings of a tiger shells under the dark overall deep brownish-black covering. Three weeks later, as this is being written, the Cypraea tigris markings seem to be more in evidence and it is now conceded to be a tiger shells in the bulla (before the second row of teeth are formed) stage. This is the first recorded instance of such a find. Many collectors have been heard to complain that their collection does not contain a juvenile tiger shells. The answer in the light of this find, seems to be that you may have found one and didn't know what you had. Had this specimen been cleaned in the state in which it was found, it would not have been identified as a tiger shells. With the advent of the salt water tanks in many collector's homes now-a-days, specimens can be kept alive for weeks, and viewed under varying conditions, as well as at various stages of growth. At the end of three weeks, this specimen, which is in the Andrus tank, was very active, had started to repair a small break in the lip, and seemed healthy. The animal is very black, but the outside of the mantle shows small cillae as round white dots. It is slightly over an inch in length. The constriction of the shell at the anterior end is very pronounced. Wood malls
Wood malls Qawra Point, a limestone peninsula between St. Paul's Bay and Salina Bay, is weathered into a huge mass of sharp edges. The St. Paul's Bay flank is comparatively barren. Brown algaes predominate. Below low water mark there are abundant echinoderms and a few solitary corals. Many attractive fish live here, but there are few shells. Wood malls
